About Essex

Essex, Connecticut is the quintessential New England town.  The town is made up of the three Villages of Essex, Centerbrook, and Ivoryton and is the home of approximately 6,700 residents.

The three Villages offer an eclectic mix of shops, marinas, restaurants, galleries and other arts and entertainment attractions.  Three of its most famous destinations are The Ivoryton Playhouse, The Essex Steam Train, and the Griswold Inn.  As a bonus, this well-managed town also has one of the lowest tax rates in Connecticut.

Located near the mouth of the Connecticut River and only 5 miles from Long Island Sound, it is a favorite for people who love boating, the beach and the tranquility of small town life.

Essex also has the distinction of being located about equal distance (2 hours) between New York City and Boston with the Amtrak train station only 3.5 miles away in Old Saybrook.  In addition commuters can access Shoreline East trains in Old Saybrook, as well as connect with the Metro-North service in New Haven.
